Panel Overview: Critical Safety Items (CSI's) are specific items that will
result in an accident/injury if they occur. Items that are
identified must be addressed/eliminated, regardless of the
probability of occurrence. The DoD is presently
implementing CSI policy and will likely impact significantly
DoD operations and related industry counterparts. The
panel will focus upon various interpretations of CSI policy
and the application to aging aircraft.

Session 31: Panel Discussion: Open Systems
Panel Discussion: Open Systems Avionics Design
Moderator: David Lund, Director (Aerospace Vehicle Systems Institute) (AVSI)
3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Panel Overview:
Aging Avionics area major contributor to the cost of
maintaining commercial and military fleets. Methods to
mitigate the effects of DMSMS and accelerate the current
slow and costly acquisition of new systems need to be
developed to ensure that legacy aircraft continue to be
safe and effective and that future aircraft do not repeat
the same mistakes. Many feel that use of "Open Systems"
in avionics design and procurement will meet this need.
Regardless of the standards selected, an effective,
cooperative relationship among government, commercial
operators, and the avionics suppliers and integrators
continues to be forged. DoD has several "Open System"
efforts underway. Several approaches to achieving longterm
viability; Viable Combat Avionics, and Modular Open
Systems Approach Interoperability Initiative (MOSA II) are
being pursued. Industry efforts also add to an overall
approach to open systems. The Open Systems Joint Task
Force (OSJTF) has provided overall guidance. Success of
these initiatives will depend on the combined efforts of the
DoD/industry leaders.

Session 35: Panel Discussion: CPC Czar
Panel Discussion: Congressionally Directed Corrosion Czar
- What Is It and Why Is It Important?
Panel Moderator: Dave Erickson, Deputy Director, OSD CPC Executive Office
8:00 AM - 10:00 AM Panel Overview: Because of the variety of actions being taken by many government agencies addressing corrosion prevention control (CPC), Congress saw this duplication of effort as wasteful and inefficient. By designating a "Czar", Congress desires to focus resources and people on an organized and integrated CPC approach. This panel will address the overall approach to this multi-faceted effort, discuss status and future plans, present and solicit technology opportunities, and involve the audience in discussions regarding the CPC directions being taken on behalf of government agencies. Attendees of the panel will receive a broad overview of the many efforts being undertaken to cover the full waterfront of problems being addressed by the CPC Czar and receive insight
